Heroes

This year we are studying heroes. We have made a list of what a hero is, and the qualities of a hero. These are some of the qualities of a hero: selflessness, motivation, forgiveness, courageousness, thoughtfulness, compassion and so many more. Our class believes that a hero is someone who does good for others, who makes changes for a better society, who stands up for others, who isn’t afraid to try something new, who stands up for fair rights, who makes a difference, who fights for something they believe in, who is brave and who risks his/her life for others and who works for the greater good. We believe that heroes are very important people who do all these things For example, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King Jr., Jackie Mitchell, Harriett Tubman, firemen, and Navy Seals are all heroes. We also talked about the difference between a hero and a celebrity. A hero is somebody who does something to help others, and a celebrity is somebody that just makes music, or does a sport. They did not do something in order to change the world for the better.

Who are your heroes?

  1. I remember when I was a child, I was in the car with my dad and he stopped the car to help someone who was in an accident. He had to help lift a woman out of the car. I remember thinking my dad was a hero at that moment. I wonder if we can have "Heroes in the Moment," that don't make big changes in the world, but maybe just one little change. What do you think?

  4. Adding on to Alise I think that a hero is someone who is not afraid to fight for what they believe. What else?

  5. Yesterday, in Washington D.C. there was a celebration of the new Martin Luther King Monument. We should look at the monument online as a class. Many people came to the celebration to talk about MLK and what a great man he was. One person said that if MLK was alive today he would still be fighting for justice for all people. He is my hero.

  6. Hi! Just dropping by, and thought you might be interested in developing your heroes theme with other children around the world :)

    Check out: VoiceThread Hero Project

And to answer your question, I'd say that a hero is someone who cares, someone who puts other people's needs before their own. My father is my hero. He's always there for me.

  7. Thank you for visiting, Michael. We checked out the VoiceThread Hero Project. We are currently setting up individual accounts for the students so that they can contribute. Thanks for making the connection!

    Warm regards,

  8. I used to think that I did not have any big heroes that were still living and it sort of made me feel sad to live in a time without heroes. But then a few years ago I met one. Her name is Vandana Shiva. She is an indian scientist who is taking on Monsanto all by herself. She works tirelessly trying to save our farmers and the worlds food supply. She really inspires me. I would like to help her somehow...

  9. My dad has been my hero. When I was a child, I was always so proud because my dad helped the single mothers and poor families in our community by fixing their cars or things around their houses. Our family had a huge garden and my dad shared food with families without food. And my dad was a mentor to children who did not have a dad. He would take them out to dinner and help to show them how to change their own tire, or make simple car repairs. I know that some of the families whose lives were touched by my dad often write letters to me and to my mother saying how much they appreciated and loved my dad. I miss him very much.
